    Chainmaille is wonderfully meditative: you open and close small metal rings, linking them in repeating weaves to build jewelry, accessories, and even armour.

    The barrier is tiny, just two pliers and a bag of rings, and the rhythm is genuinely soothing, like knitting in metal.

    The honest reality is it's repetitive by nature (a big piece is a lot of rings) and your hands tire at first, but the patterns are endlessly varied and the results are sturdy and beautiful.

    First weave

    1. Get jump rings and two pairs of pliers, A bag of rings and two pliers is the whole starter kit. Pre-opened ring kits make the first weave easier.
    2. Open and close a ring cleanly, Twist sideways, never pull apart, and close with no gap. Clean rings are the whole craft in miniature.
    3. Weave a strip of European 4-in-1, The classic armour weave, four rings through one. The pattern most people learn first.
    4. Make a bracelet with a clasp, A finished strip, sized to a wrist, with a fastening. Your first wearable piece.

    New weaves

    1. Weave a byzantine chain, A dense, rope-like weave that looks far harder than it is. A big step up in impressiveness.
