R-value, and why it finally means something

R-value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher is warmer, and unlike almost every other outdoor spec it is now measured against a single standard, ASTM F3340, which the industry adopted in 2020. Before that every brand tested its own way and the numbers were not comparable. Now they are.

The rough bands:

  • R 1 to 2 — warm summer nights only
  • R 2 to 4 — summer and mild shoulder season
  • R 4 to 5 — three-season, most thru-hiking
  • R 5 and up — snow, frozen ground, winter

R-values add. Put the R2.0 foam pad under the R4.5 inflatable and you get roughly R6.5, which is how a lot of people handle a cold stretch without buying a winter pad. It is also insurance, because if the inflatable punctures you are still off the ground.

Thickness is not warmth. A three-inch air mattress with no insulation inside is colder than a half-inch of foam, because air circulates inside the chamber and carries heat away. What makes the NeoAir warm is the reflective layer and the internal baffling, not the depth.

The weight surprise, and the moisture one

Two things catch people out.

Do not inflate by mouth. Every breath puts warm moist air inside the pad. That moisture condenses, sits in the baffles, and over a season it grows mould and degrades the insulation from the inside where you cannot clean it. Carry the patch kit and know how to find the hole

An air pad that fails is a cold, sleepless night, and the leak is almost never where you think. Inflate it hard, then run it slowly past your ear or your wet lips, or hold sections underwater in a stream and watch for bubbles. Dry it, patch it, and give the patch as long as you can before you sleep on it. The kit weighs almost nothing and lives in the stuff sack.

Sleeping on it well

The pad is half the system and a few habits get more out of it than a warmer model would.

Under-inflate it. Almost everyone pumps an air pad rock hard, which pushes your hips up and leaves your shoulders and knees unsupported. Fill it fully, then let air out until your hip just barely stops short of the ground when you lie on your side. It is much more comfortable and it is free.

Clear the ground. Two minutes kicking away stones and sticks protects the pad and improves the night more than any spec does.

Store it unrolled and open. Long-term compression damages the foam and baffles. At home, leave the valve open and the pad flat under a bed, not stuffed in its sack.

Pair the R-value to the bag. A bag rated to freezing on an R2 pad will not get you to freezing. The two numbers work together and the pad is usually the weak one.

Add the foam pad in the cold. Layering the Z Lite under an air pad is the cheapest warmth upgrade there is.

Match R-value to the coldest ground you expect, not the air temperature.
