What ANSI Z87.1 actually certifies
Z87.1 is the American standard for eye protection, and glasses meeting it are marked Z87 on the frame or lens. It is not decorative — it means the product has passed defined impact tests rather than simply being made of plastic.
Z87+ is the high-impact rating. The test fires a quarter-inch steel ball at the lens at 150 feet per second, and the lens must not fracture or come out of the frame. For anything involving a hammer and rock, that is the rating you want.
Basic Z87 without the plus passes a lower-energy drop test — fine for dust and splashes, not for flying chips.
Europe uses EN166 with its own letter codes, where B is medium impact and A is high. Either standard is fine; the point is that one of them is present.

Side coverage and the fogging problem
