People buy a warm sleeping bag, sleep badly, and blame the bag. Almost always it was the pad. You compress the insulation underneath you to nothing, so the only thing between your body and the ground is the pad, and cold ground pulls heat out of you far faster than cold air. The number that describes this is R-value, and it is the one specification worth understanding before you spend anything.

R-value, and why the ground is the problem

Lie on a sleeping bag and the insulation underneath you compresses flat. Insulation works by trapping air, so compressed insulation is doing nothing at all — whatever the bag is rated to, the underside of you is being cooled directly by the ground.

Ground is also a far better conductor than air. A 5°C night on a good pad is comfortable; the same night with a thin pad is miserable regardless of the bag.

R-value measures how well the pad resists that heat loss. Since 2020 it has been standardised (ASTM F3340), so numbers from different brands are finally comparable. Roughly:

  • Up to 2 — summer, warm nights
  • 2 to 4 — three-season, the range most people want
  • 4 to 5.5 — cold shoulder seasons, frost
  • Above 5.5 — winter and snow

And it is additive. A cheap foam pad under an inflatable adds its R-value to the total, which is the cheapest way to extend a summer pad into autumn.

The three kinds of pad

Closed-cell foam is a folding sheet of dense foam. It cannot puncture, needs no inflating, costs very little, and doubles as a seat. It is bulky and firm — comfort is limited. Serious walkers still carry one as a backup or a booster layer.

Self-inflating is foam inside an airtight shell: open the valve and it draws air in as the foam expands. Comfortable and reliable, heavier and bulkier than pure air pads. This is the sensible car-camping choice.

Inflatable air pads are the lightest and pack smallest, and modern ones use internal baffles and reflective films to get high R-values at very low weight. They cost the most and they can puncture, which is why they ship with a repair kit and why you should carry it.

If you are driving to a campsite, comfort and bulk do not matter much — buy thick. If you are carrying it, weight and pack size decide everything.

Do not inflate by mouth in the cold

Breath carries moisture, which condenses inside the pad and over time grows mildew you cannot reach. In freezing weather it can also freeze inside the baffles. A pump sack weighs almost nothing, fills a pad in about a minute, and keeps the inside dry. If you must use your mouth, leave the valve open to dry the pad at home.

Side sleepers and width

Most pads are 20 inches wide, which is fine on your back and marginal on your side, where your shoulder and hip carry all your weight on a narrower footprint. If you sleep on your side, prioritise thickness — 2.5 inches or more, so your hip does not bottom out — and consider a 25-inch wide pad.

The other common complaint, rolling off, is usually a pad that is too firm. Let a little air out until it just supports your hip and it will feel dramatically better. A drum-tight pad is the most common beginner mistake.
