The reason woodworkers use a mallet rather than a hammer is not tradition. What dead blow actually means

A dead blow mallet is hollow and partly filled with loose steel shot or sand. When the head strikes and stops, the shot keeps moving forward for a fraction of a second and then hits the inside of the face.

That second, delayed impulse does two things. It adds force after the initial contact, so more of your energy goes into the work. And it cancels the rebound, because the shot is pushing forward exactly when the head would otherwise be bouncing back.

For chisel work that is genuinely useful: the chisel advances and stops rather than jumping, so a paring cut lands where you aimed it. For assembly it means a joint closes without springing back open.

The trade-off is feel. Dead blow heads are usually polymer and heavier than a wooden mallet of the same size, and some people find they lose the tactile feedback that tells them how the cut is going.

Wood, rawhide, polymer and brass

Wood — beech, hornbeam, lignum vitae — is the traditional chisel mallet. Light enough for controlled tapping, and it deforms slightly on impact, which spreads the blow across a chisel handle instead of concentrating it. It wears down over years, which is normal and much preferred to the chisel wearing instead.

Keep the steel hammer away from your chisels
