A millinery needle, also sold as a straw needle, has an eye no wider than its shaft. That sounds like a trivial detail and it is the entire reason the needle exists: the whole length passes through stiff buckram, felt and sinamay at a constant diameter, so nothing catches halfway and nothing leaves a hole bigger than the thread.
The kilonewton figure stamped on a carabiner is measured one way: along the spine, with the gate shut. An archaeology trowel is a pointing trowel from a bricklayer, borrowed wholesale, and the profession is unusually specific about it. Four to five inches, one piece of forged high-carbon steel from tip to tang, and a blade that will be worn down to a stub over a career. Welded trowels snap at the neck, and everyone has seen it happen.
Every disc has four numbers stamped on it and almost nobody explains them at the point of sale. They describe how it flies, and for a new player the important one is the third: a negative turn number means the disc will fly straight for you, and a positive fade number means it will not.
A dry bag does not fail because water gets through the fabric. It fails because the top was rolled twice instead of three times, or because the bag was dragged down a sandstone slot until the coating wore off.
